3G is the third generation of wireless technologies. It comes with enhancement over previous wireless technologies, like high-speed transmission, advanced multimedia access and global roaming.
3G is mostly used with mobile phone and handsets as a means to connect the phone to the internet or the other IP network in order to make voice and video call, to download and upload data and to surf the net. After 2G came the more efficient technology, 3G, it established its roots in late 2000, while ITU agreed to the 3G standards in 1999. The Third generation technology now can easily be found all over the world on nearly all standard radio technologies such as CDMA and GSM.
The first cellular network provider that set up the 3G gird in the year 2003, is Verizon. 3G technology provides up to 2 mbps data transfer rate at fixed spots (when user is stationary) and minimum 374 kbps when the user is moving.
Today almost all the well-known carriers of US provide 3G service and now there are lots of gadgets available in the marked with 3G capability. The transfer rate for 3G network is between 128 and 144 kbps (kilobits per seconds) for devices that are moving fast and 384 kbps for slow ones (like for pedestrians). For Fixed wireless LANs, the speed goes beyond 2 Mbps.
several times higher data speed; Video-conferencing support; Web and WAP browsing at hingher speeds; IPTV (TV thorugh the Internet support).
